The design philosophy for the new school building focused on the creation of a well planned, environmentally sustainable and site specific solution, in support of the Council"s principle objective of raising standards of educational achievement through a flexible, socially inclusive and integrated space provision. The concept of social inclusion relates to the school"s position as a valuable community asset and places great importance on achieving barrier free facilities to accommodate a wide range of users.
The design solution is based upon a curved two storey frontage, with three storey teaching wings located to the rear. A feature oval drum highlights the main entrance, with generous two storey social spaces offering pleasing views to the rear landscaped courtyards. Two artificial, floodlit sports pitches and two grass football pitches complement the internal sports facilities, creating valuable sports provision for the Vale of Leven community. Also located within the school is a language and communication unit forming a distinct part of the Pupil Support Department, specifically for pupils placed on the autistic spectrum. Flexible teaching and activity spaces allow the opportunity to work and interact as a whole class, as individuals or in groups, encouraging social interaction.
The site for the school is in the heart of the community and highly visible from the surrounding residential areas. The civic presence of the school and its importance within the community has been enhanced by the creation of a public plaza in front of the school providing a clearly defined entrance for both pupils and staff and visitors. Courtyards between the classroom wings provide safe, secure outdoor spaces which can be utilised for external dining, teaching and social gathering. Keppie has not only provided the pupils and staff with an excellent teaching facility, but also a building that the wider community will be proud to utilise.
